San Francisco Reader

The San Francisco Reader was not unlike the Chicago Reader, in that it was THE source for information on literary smarts, arts and performing arts, but for the city of San Francisco.

In addition to publishing conversations with Leo Litwack and Herbert Gold, excerpts from novels by Herbert Gold, and new fiction and poetry, the San Francisco Reader paid me for arts journalism. Here are some clips:

I also wrote numerous small reviews, such as this one:

With Joe the King, Frank Whaley makes his directorial debut, and he does so intelligently. He renders a story of an abused young outsider that, while laden with stars like Val Kilmer and Ethan Hawke, feels relatively sparse and unsentimental. In the character development of 14-year-old misdemeanant Joe Henry, whose only consistent comforts in his work-a-day world come from sweets and cigarettes, Whaley cooly explores the grounds of adolescence, isolation, and self-sacrifice. He is aided by the remarkable performance of Noah Fleiss as the dissipated and fragile Joe and the good, though slightly bloated, performance of Kilmer as Joe's alcoholic father.
